Technology Blog #3: Building My Digital Presence as an Actor
Chapter 5 highlights how important it is to control your narrative, connect with others who share your goals, and share your work. As someone who strives to become an on-screen actor, this chapter directly connects to my career path. Acting is no longer just about auditions and agents. It’s also about networking, visibility, and branding . Casting directors, fans, and producers often search for actors online before making decisions. Having a professional digital personality, whether that’s through a personal website, acting reels, or social media, it can make a vast difference. Chapter 5 discusses being intentional about what you share and how you demonstrate yourself online. As an actor, that means I should be posting headshots, behind-the-scenes experiences, clips of performances, and monologues in a way that reflects my professionalism and personality. It also means interacting with the acting community and learning from others in the industry.
Another key idea from Chapter 5 is collaboration and connection. The book describes that growth happens when professionals connect with others, support one another, and share ideas. Networking is everything for actors. Building relationships with fellow actors, writers and directors can open doors to new opportunities. Social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or even LinkedIn can operate as digital networking spaces. Actors can collaborate on short films, create content, or engage in online acting workshops instead of waiting around for opportunities. Just like instructors from Professional Learning Networks (PLNs), actors can scheme creative networks that help them evolve their skills and stay motivated.
Finally, Chapter 5 reminds readers that being connected also means being a lifelong learner. Technology allows professionals to elevate their skills regularly by accessing webinars, communities, and online classes. As an actor, I can use digital platforms, online acting courses, and virtual auditions to sharpen my skills. The entertainment industry is highly competitive, so staying engaged and resilient is essential. This chapter helped me realize that success in acting is about forming meaningful connections, building a thoughtful online presence, and continuing to evolve through digital tools. Becoming a “connected educator” is identical to becoming a “connected actor” in various ways, both requiring professionalism, the smart use of technology, and passion.
I really liked your point about acting not just being auditions anymore. Using social media for branding and networking is a total game changer for staying visible in the industry
