Technology Blog #1: Building a Personal Learning Network as an Actor in the Digital Age

Chapter 2 of The Connected Educator: Learning and Leading in a Digital Age targets the idea that schooling no longer only happens in classrooms or formal training environments. The authors illustrate the importance of making a Personal Learning Network (PLN), this is a group of people, resources, and digital tools that help individuals learn and grow regularly. Instead of waiting for scheduled instruction, connected learners take charge for their own evolution by using technology such as blogs, social media, professional communities, and online videos. This chapter points out that learning is self-directed, ongoing, and powered through important connections with others who share identical goals or interests.

As a theater major with an acting concentration who wants to work in television and film, the ideas in Chapter 2 relate to my future career heavily. Acting is a highly competitive field and evolving regularly, and success relies on staying adaptable, informed, and connected. By building a personal learning network, I can keep track of casting directors, filmmakers, actors, and acting coaches on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. These professionals generally spread audition tips, monologue advice, behind-the-scenes insights, and progression of the industry that are not always taught in traditional classes. Self-tape tutorials, virtual communities, and online acting workshops also allow me to keep developing my skills outside of rehearsals and coursework.

Chapter 2 also points out the importance of learning from others and contributing to the community, which is needed in the acting industry. Networking is not just about getting roles, but about forming legitimate professional relationships. By interacting with online acting communities, commenting generously on posts, and sharing my own creative work or experiences, I could become an active member in my learning network. This connected road prepares me for a career in TV and film where collaboration, versatility, and digital presence are important. Overall, Chapter 2 emphasizes that being a successful actor in today’s world must not only have talent, but also the capability to learn constantly through technology and connections with others in the industry.

  1. I liked how you connected personal learning networks to acting and the entertainment industry. I agree that social media and online communities can help actors stay updated and improve their skills outside of class.
